It’s a nice hôtel but the caravan park is gravel with a small pool for toddlers. Frightfully over priced for the night at R240 per tiny stand and R75 per person. For camping and caravan’s, rather go to the Karoo National park, as it is far superior.

When we visited this lodge in January 2024 we were told they were busy revamping this place so when we arrived in January 2025, we were shocked to see that nothing had changed. Last year there was a continuous power issue and again this year. I couldn't connect to the Wifi at all on either my cellphone or laptop so that was frustrating. The room was also full of cockroaches.

The disparity in reviews is because of the disparity of the condition and quality of the accommodation at same place. The economy family unit is not suitable for a family. It is small with low ceilings opens into an enclosed passage that is not adequately ventilated . Small maintenance and repair things give a bad first impression like window putty and replacing broken timber doors. The images on booking platform must be updated and not use wide angles. The website should show outside photos of these batch of units so that you know what you are getting as opposed to exteriors of deluxe rooms only , which we thought we were getting , just a modest room. The temperature and ventilation was so bad I didn't think it would be a safe stay for my baby so we left , even though we knew we would lose the money . The most expensive stay on our road trip and we were unfortunately disappointed. Economy should imply modesty in size perhaps, not poorly ventilated and maintained . Book the deluxe units rather with air conditioning when travelling with a young family, if you are counting on getting some rest for the next leg of your trip.

Not good that’s all I’m gonna say! Very unhappy with the stay. They have small glass shelves in the bathroom right above the toilet, if you hit your head on it and break it you’re responsible to pay them R200 for fixing. A shelf with no purpose but just a hazard. Will most likely never stop here again.

Very disappointed with place. Everything looks good on the pics but the pics are probably 5years old. It’s a motel and not a lodge. Pool area was run down and uninviting. The table in our room almost collapsed it was so unstable. Not suitable for kids at all but we specified that we bringing two kids with.

We stayed in the standard twin room. It's pretty basic. Wifi so useless it's effectively non-existent. Cockroaches. Gaps of 2-3cms underneath entrance door and bathroom door. In contrast, the staff were pleasant. Price excessive for what is provided.

Yes, it’s a fairly basic motel on the main road between Jo burg and Cape Town, but it really deserves to be declared a South African national monument. You can only guess at the number of travellers who have stayed here over the years or seen it from the road. I recently stayed here again after a 40-year gap and loved every minute of it - the pure Karoo air, the friendliness of the staff and the surprisingly good restaurant. I enjoyed it so much that I returned for a second night. The smallest rooms are very small but if you choose a bigger room (not expensive), walk around the grounds and eat supper and breakfast here you are unlikely to regret it. Wagon Wheel deserves to go on for another 100 years. It probably will.
