Rental basis: Entire house or apartment Number of bedrooms: 2; Number of other rooms with beds: 1 Treis Ekklisies (i.e. three churches) is a secluded seaside village located 64km south of Heraklion, amid the wild and inhospitable landscape of Asterousia Mountains. The surrounding area, one of the most isolated in Crete, is difficult to access, but hosts some of the most amazing beaches in Greece. To get to Treis Ekklisies you have to drive through a snake-like asphalt road with amazing sea views, about 10km long, starting from the village Paranymfi. In Paranymfi, you can visit the former monastery of Saint Paul with the old frescoes (14th century). Half a kilometer after Paranimfi, you can admire the stunning views of the Libyan Sea and Tris Ekklisies from the imposing waterfall of Ambas Gorge (145m high). The settlement of Treis Ekklisies is built in a bay formed at the exit of the gorge of Ambas. The walls of the surrounding gorges are home to the largest colony of vultures in Greece and Southern Europe, including the bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus), one of the rarest species of vulture in Europe. The gorge of Ambas is located 53km south of Heraklion, in Asterousia Mountains. The Mousoulis stream, which flows in winter, collects water from the springs of the Paranymfi and Amygdalos plateau (approximately 700m altitude) and transports it to the beach of Tris Ekklisies. The smooth course of the stream on the fertile plateau is interrupted very abruptly when it encounters the rocky fault of Asterousia, forming the imposing waterfall of Ambas. The waterfall has a total height of 145m and is one of the highest waterfalls in Greece in free fall, after the waterfall of Mastoras in the gorge of Ha (215m) and the waterfall of Perdika in Samaria Gorge (240m). Just above the waterfall there is a road, where a sign leads us after the village Paranymfi, on the way to Tris Ekklisies. At the parking lot there is a ruined watermill and from there starts a very short path along the cliff that leads to a place with aShow More
