Best Western Plus Hotel Amstelveen

Amsterdam Airport Amstelveen|2.64km from Stichting Jan Verschoor
So it was our first time in Amsterdam and only having recommendations for restaurants meant that we were unsure what/where to stay… so we let price ish be our guide. We opted for the Best Western in Amstelveen and the fact that it was a global hotel chain you can really go wrong… We had booked a package holiday minus the transfer from Airport to hotel. So from the airport we purchased 2x 3 day tourist travel cards and caught the next train to Amsterdam central station. Then we turned on Apple Maps and input the hotel address and set it to public transport. Tram 24, tram 5 then tram 25 heading towards Sacharovlaan station. From the station the hotel is situated next to a Volvo garage and other businesses and is about a 5 to 10 minute walk. The room was huge, the bed was bigger than our king size. There’s plenty of power points, a TV (which we couldn’t get working..?) air conditioning and heated floors in the bathroom. A Nespresso machine and pods were in the room and a hair dryer (that seemed to overheat and shutdown frequently). We booked B&B and it’s served until 10:30. It’s not the best variety for breakfast, obviously catering for a continental style. Personal preferences I would have liked the sausages to be less anaemic. Our room was on the 3rd floor and quite quiet as it was the opposite side to the businesses. They do take a €150 pre approved deposit on a credit card that they will take if there’s any issues with the room after you have checked out. Yes the hotel is approximately a 40 minute tram ride to the city centre but we didn’t mind travelling each time. One last thing to note is, you don’t have to go to Centraal Station from the airport to get to the hotel. Instead from the airport train station look for trains to Zuid, then catch the tram 25 to Sacharovlaan. Our 3 day tourist public transport pass ran out before our departure so we brought a 1 hour travel pass as hotel to Zuid to airport is about 40 minutes buuuuut that ticket wouldn’t allow us to enter the train station, so we had to buy some one way tickets from Zuid to airport. That worked 😃

Hotel Cafe Restaurant Abina

Would rate it lower if I could. The room was terrible. It was small and there was next to one space to store clothes, and while this didn't bother me for my 2 night stay, it would be really inappropriate for any longer stay. Toilet and shower are shared with many other rooms and are poorly kept. Cracked tiles, random empty bottles of shampoo and condition etc just left in a pile on the floor. There is a sink in the room, but our tap was cracked and sprayed water out the side when you turned it on. There is also a lot of noise outside, as late as even 11pm and with our window broken, we couldn't close it properly to help shut out some of the noise. Food in the bar below is good but VERY expensive for what you get. We also paid for breakfast included and it was nice to help yourself to bread, a toaster, some crackers, deli meat and cheese but... it was just stuff that they bought from the Lidl literally right across the road, about 20 metres away. Not worth how much they were charging for it. They also double charged us and are refusing to give a refund. We spoke to staff at the time and they all seemed friendly and happy to help but couldn't do anything. It was all ”Oh, I'll text the person who is doing the breakfast tomorrow”. She didn't. And when we explained it to the person on breakfast her only suggestion was also to text a co-worker. They took our details and said they'd email us about it. They didn't. We had to chase them up with multiple emails which they all ignored, so we emailed the company through whom we booked the stay. They contacted Abina who claimed that they'd already sent the refund through. They hadn't, which we have proven with bank statements. They still haven't. As of writing this it's been 6 weeks since our stay. No refund and extremely poor communication from Abina through and through. Absolute worst hotel experience to date. Don't stay here.

Aparthotel Adagio Amsterdam City South

This hotel is about 5 minutes walk from the nearest subway station. There are no restaurants around the hotel, and the restaurants that come with the hotel are also very good. The room is really nice, it is very comfortable to live.

Grand Hotel Amstelveen

Amsterdam Airport
The hotel is in Amstelveen which is around 30 mins out from Amsterdam, we found this to make us feel safer and allowed us to see more of the Netherlands. We used the GVB app and bought 4-day passes that gave us unlimited travel on all GVB buses, trams, metros, and trains. It took us around 45 minutes through walking and getting public transport to be in the centre of Amsterdam. There are quicker ways but we used the app to identify GVB transport only as to get the best use from our travel pass and to not endure further costs. One of the best hotels we have stayed in, when we arrived at 10am we were informed by the receptionist that our room had been upgraded to the 'Junior Art Suite' instead of the standard room we had initially booked and that it was ready for us to go to. We were expecting to drop off our bags and come back later but the staff at reception informed us the room was ready and we were allowed to go up. When we arrived in our room we found it to be spacious, clean and tasteful. The room is equipped with towels, bath mat, extra pillows, complimentary toiletries, air conditioning, a safe, a mini fridge and tea and coffee making facilities (a nespresso machine and pods!). The bed was large and very comfortable, we slept really well whilst staying here. The shower was lovely and warm and had really good pressure, as well as the bath. We were informed of the timings for breakfast (7-10 Mon - Sat and 7-11 on Sundays) on the first day of our arrival. At breakfast we were able to choose from a variety of different breakfast items and as much as we wanted. Breakfast included, fruit, deli meats and cheeses, cereal (incl. granola), salad items, cooked eggs, cooked bacon, coffee, tea, fruit juice and water. We felt well replenished when having breakfast and is definitely worth the expense. On the whole, our stay at Grand Hotel Amstelveen was amazing and we will highly recommend to anyone thinking about staying in the area of Amsterdam!

This was our first stay at this location, but it certainly won't be our last. We had a bit of a panic during the day about arrival times as trains were horribly delayed, however the reception team were kind and reassuring throughout. The hotel is located next to a tram stop (take Metro to Zuid and then tram 5 to Kronenburg) for easy access to the city centre and the room was clean and comfortable. We didn't have breakfast, and there is no bar or restaurant at this hotel, however a range of drinks and snacks are available at reception and it is possible to order in food. Reception staff were also most helpful with printing off our travel documents for the next day.
