My wife and I spent a couple of nights at the Bailiffgate and for the most part it was very enjoyable - a large comfortable bed, quiet room with view of the castle, friendly staff. On the other hand, it does have some issues and while some of them can be put down to teething troubles (eg menu pricing discrepancies, no coffee machine, hidden service charges) there is a major drawback with the hotel car park. There are 61 steps from the car park up to the hotel, the equivalent of three flights of stairs, and with luggage on a hot day that presents quite the challenge on arrival. Having finally reached reception we were told by a receptionist (who had clearly heard it all before) that guests are encouraged to drop their luggage at the front door before parking. That simply isn't true - there is no suggestion on the website or in the pre-visit communication. According to another review, there is valet parking, but again nobody offered that, although it would have eased our arrival considerably. Ironically there is limited free on-street parking at the front door (with a parking disc) but the hotel directs you round the back and down the hill. Given the 'mature' demographic of most of the guests, parking is going to be a significant issue for the Bailiffgate if they want to attract repeat business.
