The staff is very nice & efficient. We noted it’s a smoking room after check-in, and the staff arranged another non-smoking room for us as requested upon booking. The swimming pool locates on the rooftop, with a rooftop bar & restaurant. Located near the city center, close to lots of local food & restaurants.

We actually booked a room with King size bed. But when I was at the reception counter in late afternoon for check-in, the staff(a male Chinese) who served us asked if we would prefer a two-beds room. We didn't even ask for it but were given a better room setting. On top of this, the staff was alert enough to know that we came in a group with 4 others who booked seaview rooms and assigned us to be on the same floor. To our surprise, the room was very big. My friend and I were very pleased with the service provided.

I recently stayed at Mercure Kota Kinabalu, and my overall experience was a mixture of positives and negatives. The hotel's ambiance and service were generally acceptable, but a couple of aspects left me with a less than perfect impression. On the positive side, the room, although not the promised city view, was comfortable and well-maintained. The amenities provided were standard and met our basic needs for a short stay. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful, adding a pleasant touch to our overall experience. However, one notable drawback was the discrepancy in the room description. Despite being assured of a city view, we were assigned a room overlooking the opposite facing the busy road. While this may seem like a minor issue, it did impact our overall satisfaction, as the promise of a particular view was one of the factors influencing our choice. Another inconvenience was the lack of dedicated parking facilities at the hotel. This meant that my husband had to purchase parking coupons daily, adding an unexpected expense to our stay. Moreover, the strict enforcement of parking regulations by 8 am posed a challenge, especially for guests who preferred to start their day later. In conclusion, Mercure Kota Kinabalu is a decent choice for a short stay, offering comfortable accommodations and friendly service. However, potential guests should be aware of potential discrepancies in room assignments and the absence of on-site parking facilities, which may affect the overall convenience and cost of their stay.

The view from the hotel is ruined by the building site next door but it is reasonably priced for the area. Service was one of the poorest I’ve had in Malaysia apart from Gulam (Matt) who was a massive help for us to get to places we wanted to see. The staff at the upstairs pool didn’t want to be there and weren’t interested in serving, a smile is free and short snappy sentences don’t help in this industry- maybe some retraining is needed if this place wants to compete with the nearby luxury hotels. The express laundry service was difficult to arrange and I felt like I was putting a burden on them even though that’s their job. The breakfast was okay without being outstanding - again, the people making the breakfast looked like they were there because they needed to be. Without Gulam (Matt), this review would look a lot worse. This guy should be in charge of customer service lessons for this hotel. The room was clean and big but the view started straight into a brick wall of a loading bay. There aren’t maybe pictures as there wasn’t much worthy of taking one.

Mattress a bit hard. Reception a bit slow in checking in service but friendly staff. Breakfast buffet just average. Overall still worth the price. Love the location. Overall service is quite good. Just need a little bit of improvement

The only hotel in DesignHotelsTM group in Borneo island! The lobby and room design, coffee, cocktail and food quality is probably the best you'll find in Sabah and its at par with Singapore standards. The hotel doesn't just give you the environment of a design hotel, great coffee, bespoke cocktails, delicious food but it also offers true Sabahian hospitality that you will not experience anywhere else. As soon as I arrived, one of the hotel owners personally came and greeted me and spend his time to give me a tour and explain the concept of the hotel and its design. The design of the hotel is influenced by different Sabahian landscapes and local craftsmanship depicted through contemporary means. Materials and craft is all sourced locally. I had the chance to meet both the owners and their hospitality was unprecedented. They took their time to get to know me and introduce Sabah and its culture. Something that you will not experience at big chain hotels. The LUMA is a brand new hotel group. There will always be room for improvement in their services. The willingness to improve is there and they listen if you have any complaints or needs.

This is the first complaint review I leave while living in Kota Kinabalu for the past eight years. I booked for a sleepover party I made to celebrate the 16th birthday of my beloved daughter and friends. The connecting room, birthday decoration, and extra bed that the hotel specifically requested were not prepared, and above all, the smell of mold from the room was shocking. I am an asthmatic. I couldn't complain in front of happy children, so I had a terrible night. When I woke up in the morning, the children also had a hard time with the smell of mold. I felt sorry and ashamed to my daughter and friends. I talked to the staff about the situations while checking out, and they told me to leave a review. Room numbers 7331 and 7332 must be checked.

I've had the privilege of staying in numerous Shangri-La's throughout Southeast Asia, and this particular one felt somewhat dated and in dire need of modernisation. I could see signs of improvements in progress, with sections that appeared to have already received a facelift. On my first day, I ventured to the sauna, only to find the temperature so lukewarm that I couldn't even work up a sweat. I voiced my discontent, and I'm pleased to report that the issue was addressed promptly by the next day. One aspect that left me somewhat disenchanted was the interaction, or rather lack thereof, between the staff and guests. It didn't quite embody the exemplary service one would expect from a high-end 5-star establishment. However, there was a shining exception to this observation - Addy, who was stationed at the breakfast area. Addy demonstrated a commendable level of attentiveness, engaging guests at their tables and ensuring needs were met promptly. Whether you required additional items or sought information, Addy was the person to turn to. This kind of service truly exemplified the standard one would anticipate from a hotel of this caliber. I did have an enjoyable stay, but for this hotel to remain a five star there is room for improvement.

First impression upon check-in wasn’t great. Was told that our seaview room would only be ready at 6pm. We were informed we would get a room on a high floor and we thought since high floor room would afford better views, the wait would be worth it. They said they would call us when the room was ready. At 6.15pm, we haven’t heard from reception, so I walked to the counter to ask about status of the room. They said yes it’s ready (but no one called us) ! Unfortunately they said the room on the high floor we were supposed to get had some fault/ problem and they issued another lower floor room for us. Not the kind of service we were expecting from a 5* hotel. Late check in / room not ready , making us wait 3 hours for our room was bad enough. An afternoon wasted and ruined our plans for the day ! Seaview room but window was small and no balcony to step out. Half of the view blocked by trees and could only see a bit of the sea. Bathroom is old, needs upgrading. One sink, old bathtub, small corner shower which felt a bit of a squeeze. Showerhead is fixed, can’t turn or change the angle. Water temperature not hot enough. Breakfast was so-so. Facilities around the hotel was good but our check-in experience left a bad taste in our mouths throughout our stay.
