Rich history filled with English heritage, known as Garden city, because of the trees in the suburbs that are growing like forest. Tourism is a large part of Christchurch's economy, and it is popular for great number of national parks, ski resorts, art galleries and museums. It is one of the largest cities in New Zealand, and it has the busiest program ofannual festivals of any city from the island.

Tip: Christchurch was hit by an earthquake in 2011 so it was much damaged. Don't surprise if you see a lot of construction sites and empty lands while you're on the road.

Getting to Christchurch

The easiest and the cheapest way to get to Christchurch is through non direct flight you can book, departing from Changiai Singapore Airport, arriving to Christchurch International Airport. There is only one stop at Brisbane and the flight lasts about 12 hours. You can travel with Emirates, Multiple Airlines, Qantas Airways, and Singapore Airlines etc. Before you arrive at Christchurch Airport, you can pre- book parking online, which is a very useful thing to do. There are a lot of parking choices and public transports to the city, or throughout the airport (taxis, shuttles, vehicle rentals).

Tip: There are a lot of diners and cafes on the airport, including duty free shops and Spitfire square where you can do your shopping.

Sightseeing and shopping in the city

There are many museums, galleries, buildings and churches you can visit in Christchurch. It is rich with English history, for example: Air Force Museum, Canterbury Museum, Cardboard Cathedral, Christchurch Art Gallery and etc. For more of natural and wildlife experience see Orana Wildlife Park and Botanic Gardens, if you want to enjoy nature and fresh air.

You can do your shopping in the city center, down Cashel, High and Colombo Streets. Also, visit The Tannery, Northalnds Shopping Centre and The Palms.

Accommodation and food

It is a very good thing you can find cheap hotels in the center of the city, including the ones with the private rooms. You can find a good deal in Southwark and in the beach suburb of New Brighton as well. You can stay at cheaper hotels near the airport, and there are good deals a little outside of town.

You can eat really well among the row of restaurants along Oxford Terrace, on New Regent Street, at Riccarton Farmer's Market or have very nice drinks from boho cafes.

Tip: If you enjoy nature, long drives and own your car, or paid for a rental one, you should book hotels a little out of town, to enjoy the quiet ambience and longer drive to the city center.

You can get around easily by buses, trains, cars and even bikes, because many people drive them to promote cycling. There are also many lines of buses, and metro line.
