The location is great. Breakfasts very good. Perfect pool to cool down (cold water, seriously), good choice. For me, the location and the swimming pool (because of my daughter) is ok. I recommend it. But: Zero wardrobes, cupboards etc. We had to keep everything in suitcases and there was not even a towel rack in the bathroom. It is much more important than an extra toothbrush, toothpaste, etc. Besides, calls from a nearby mosque are awakened. These are the details that irritate. And the pillows - high and hard. In addition, the hotel complies with the description and you can safely spend a few nights in it.

On the plus side: - Great location in little India, right across the street from Kapitan restaurant which is open 24h and has great food for a decent price. Just a short walk away along Chulia street is Chinatown with street food stalls and the nightlife of Love Lane. - WiFi was very good On the minus side: - The room provides no sound isolation whatsoever from the heavily trafficked Chulia street, and to make matters worse, the nearby mosque likes to crank up the volume on the speakers during their calls to prayer. Make sure to bring ear plugs if you are planning to sleep. - The hostel did not provide toilet paper for the room, which was a first during all my travels. - The room rate was marketed as including breakfast, which it technically did, but it was a joke: it consisted of a glass of coffee and two slices of toast joined together by a razor thin layer of jam. Considering that the hostel is managed by an actual restaurant (where breakfast is also served) it's pretty obvious that this puny breakfast is only a way to game the system om booking sites. They could easily provide a decent breakfast instead. - The room was marketed as having a desk, but it did not have one, and the electric outlet was so far from the bed that there was no convenient way of using a plugged-in device. - The aircon was not adjustable. It was operated with just a button; on or off.

Everyone we met extended their stay here (one couple for up to 2 months!), including us from 2 days to a week because; the location is perfect, the rooms are clean, comfortable and affordable, the atmosphere is cosy, the people staying here great, and most importantly,- Howie is the nicest host and person we have met in 12 months travelling. He always offers you a wealth of knowledge alongside food and tea, he even took us on a road trip around Georgetown!! He is a true family man and if you stay here you are a part of the family! Highly recommend, deserves a 10* rating without a doubt. :)

The check-in process was not complicated, the staff only asked us to deposit 1. The interior of the room was complete, comfortable beds and pillows, AC and TV worked well, although the toilet amenities were not complete. For us Muslim tourists, close to the halal place, it's a plus point of this place, not only that it is, it's also close to other tourist spots in georgetown that can be reached by walking and close to the bus stop.

Booked here for New Year’s Eve and ended up staying four nights. There is literally zero vibe here so if you’re looking for a social place not the one. This wasn’t an issue for us though. The hostel is in an amazing local. Super close to love lane. Not a far walk from the ferry. Lots of street food around. Overall the stay was good. The breakfast goes until noon which is a big plus. It’s basic but really filling at the same time. The rooms were clean as well as the bathrooms. The sheets were a little too stained for me but I am picky that’s why I travel with a silk liner. The air con was great. The staff were quite helpful in helping us get around. The downsides: The wifi would cut out quite a bit. This happened a lot at night and was rather annoying. And the hostel is right across the street from a mosque. We were woken up every single morning at 5am and then again at 6am with the noise from the mosque. It was frustrating because after the 5am wake up it would be hard to fall back asleep but you could always count on the 6am to keep you up even longer. I’m sure if the room was a little further back from the street it wouldn’t have overly affected us. Just a warning that it is a little noisy here. We would stay again despite both of these negatives.

I am a frequent traveler, and I never had a horrible experience if the word ‘bad’ is not enough, such as my second stay at Spices Hotel Penang. I booked a Deluxe Room, which obviously according to the description is not the smallest room they have since the room space is 19-meter sq, still bigger than the Superior room which is only 17-meter sq. Upon my arrival, I was given a room called ”Mint Room” which is totally in a separate building from the main hotel building I used to stay in before (this was never mentioned in the advertisement for the room) And guess what? I did my measurement, and the room was only 3 meters wide and less than 4 meters in length ~which meant less than 12-meter sq including the bathroom, OMG. There was no city view like they said in the description, it was a narrow concrete wall outside the window, complete with the view of an AC outdoor unit. After I came home, I checked on booking.com, there is nothing like my room in all of the pictures shared for Deluxe rooms or even for the pictures of the Superior rooms. And as I continued to compare I noticed there is only one picture that matches the concrete wall outside the window complete with the AC outdoor unit like I had, on the Superior room description! Did Spices Hotel give me the wrong room? My bad experience didn't stop there. Please at all costs avoid the rooms in this separate building. There was no such soundproof at all in the room. Our room was on the second level, and at ground level was a Japanese restaurant TONARI. So expect to hear people talking loudly until midnight, and when the restaurant closed, it was just getting worse with the sound of its employees cleaning up and brushing all the utensils. Good luck with a good night's sleep. Then, the no soundproof saga was not ended. During my stay there I could hear the alarm from guests next to my room which was super irritating. Every day starting from 3 am, and just stop ringing until 6 am. Was somebody dead in the next room? Please Spices Hotel, do some soundproof works, your guest needs to take a rest. Also, four of the pillows provided were hard foam and only one extra pillow was soft microfiber. It's not the standard of a hotel room. For 3 nights stay, there was no housekeeping service whatsoever that came and cleaned our room. I had to ask the reception on the first night to come to refill the body shampoo. Even with putting the sign “please clean our room”, nobody came to clean. So we ended up using the same towels throughout our stay. Like I said before, my room was in a different building from the main hotel (Is that the reason for the whole bad experience/service?) which was not mentioned in the ad. Because this was my second stay with Spices Hotel, I can say that this was a completely different experience and out of my expectation of Spices Hotel's good reviews before. One of the oldest hotel along Gurney Drive but still among the best and cheapest in that area. Clean and friendly staff. Fair breakfast buffet spread. Free canned drinks and apples daily. Simply amazing hotel. We chose the seaview deluxe room and the view facing the bay was amazing. The new Gurney bay park is just in front of the hotel where you can jog and catch sunrise at the promenade. Evergreen Laurel is surely my favorite hotel in Georgetown and will come back here soon.

My elderly parents stayed at The Gurney during their medical checkup in Penang and accidentally left behind some documents. We emailed the hotel and left a message through booking.com to no avail. Then through a phone call, we got connected to Danesh at the Concierge Department, who then went the extra mile to coordinate among various departments within the hotel, and mailed the document through express courier service. His attentive service is highly appreciated.

The hotel is good and clean, but the service of parking security is terrible, before we check in, one of the security was playing his phone and videocalling with his friend，so he didnt even notice our car，when he finally noticed us after my husband was leaving to check in first， he knocked our car heavily，and said this is not parking area，i said ok，just a second，he is checking in，the security was rolling his eyes and said it emphasisly again，asked me to move it and i dont even have driving license here. One minutes later ，my husband was back with room card，he checked and let us just parking right there！！ can not believe there are rude staff in this fancy hotel！ 这个酒店的保安无比地*****，我们车停在门口去checkin ，有一个印度保安当时在草丛里玩手机压根没看到我们，然后我老公刚离开座位，车引擎今年还开这，就听见有人猛敲我车窗，我吓一跳看见这个印度保安从草丛里跑出来手机不玩了，说这不是停车位，我说好的 等一分钟，他去checkin ，我们马上开走，他在那翻着白眼大声说这不是停车位！ 我说我没驾照，不然你来开。他一副高高在上的嘴脸，站在我车门口，然后等我老公出来拿着房卡，他一看是酒店的客人，就说把车摆正，等我们下车他赶紧跑远了。酒店平时都没有服务态度的培训吗，他都把自己当这酒店主人了

The white elevator is very unique to this elevator. Tho it was slow but I don’t mind bec it so chic with glass door. Very unique indeed! Love it though I wasn’t able to take pic. 😒 +++ white elevator, water refilling dispenser, very spacious room & bathroom +++ location was quite away from the main action but there are 2 bus stops nearby, komtar & chowrasta are 5-10mins walk +++ they provide dental kit, small soap, nice shampoo/conditioner & body wash, mugs, electric kettle, safe, ref, ac was functioning very well, room telephone, tv but i did not use it +++ free wifi was good —- reception is not very friendly except for 1 Indian guy who promptly answers whatsapp tho he mistaken me for a guy at first 😄, the chinese receptionist hardly smiles, indian lady seemed to not know anything when you ask about tourist spots (i think hotel people should equip themselves with some knowledge on tourism. I mean there should be basic orientation by management on this. Times had changed and you need to have these extra customer service, just suggesting). —- i was in the assumption that cleaning is daily but i was told every other day but i still need to remind them about it. Entire hotel can use some improvement in the cleaning — no closet inside the room, you just have to hang your stuff —- my view was a huge wall —- soundproofing is bad, very noisy when people close doors or children running around. You hear toilet flushing from nearby rooms —- it was raining when I arrive and nobody offered an umbrella except on the second day when the janitor heard me. That was appreciated very much. It also made me realize that umbrella is a weapon for solo travellers so that made the carrying a little easier —- towels smell mushy maybe bec of rainy season —- sometimes bathroom had some drainage smells —- food choices was a little limited in area unless you walk for like 5-10mins. Overall stay was still on the good side. I had way worst stays than this. I did enjoy my solo trip to Penang and would love to go back. I plan to stay next time near the street art areas where the actions are. I would still recommend le embassy to other travellers.

The location is great, walking distance to nearby mall & eateries. Room was spacious & decorated in luxurious style. Toilet was clean & equipped with bath tub which was a plus point for us. Love the breakfast spread that consisted of various nice food choices & the waitresses was very helpful especially to elderly. The only drawback was noise made by nearby hotel/ karaoke area at night. Overall, its worth the money i've paid.

Modern and comfortable room located right in the heart of the shopping cluster and beside attractions at The TOP, though it’s a slightly longer walk to the Kimberly Street and Chulia Street Night Markets, as well as the street art area around Armenian Street.
