Vadodara is a city located on the banks of Vishwamitri River in the state of Gujarat in India. The city has 2000-year-old history when it used to be called Chandanavati after its ruler Raja Chandan later it was called Vadodara which in Sanskrit means the belly of a Banyan tree. The city was ruled by Gaekwad Maharajas till India’s independence. Before the Gaekwads’ the city was ruled by the Mughals. The golden period of the city is said to be under the rule of Maharaja Sayajirao III from 1875 to 1939. The city is a perfect blend of old and new with its old market, ancient places, new age buildings, and malls co-existing. It is home to a beautiful UNESCO world heritage site.

Right opposite to Champaner is the Pavagadh hill that has a Devi Kali Temple on top. You can reach there either by ropeway or by hiking. You should visit Sursagar Lake which remains full of water throughout the year and has a 120 ft. a tall statue of Lord Shiva in standing posture in the middle. Make sure that you visit the legendary Sayaji Baug which is the largest garden in western India and was built by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III. Spread over 45 hectares it houses a zoo, a planetarium, and a flower clock. Visit Laxmi Villas Palace which is the residence of the royal family and was built in 1890 and is a true expression of luxury and affluence

Tip: You can time your visit to Sursagar lake on weekends when there is a light show and it illuminates the water beautifully.
