Sandakan is a city in the Sabah state of Malaysia and is also the second-largest city in Sabah. Sandakan began to prosper when British North Boneo Company built a new settlement in 1879. During that period it developed into a major trading and commercial centre. To develop it further the British encouraged the migration of Chinese from Hong Kong. It was destroyed completely during World War II due to the Allied bombing. It is also infamously known as the starting point of death marches during World War II. Today Sandakan is one of the main ports for oil, tobacco, coffee, and sago. It is a popular tourist destination to explore the amazing rain forest, wildlife and to also learn its history.

Sandakan Airport is a domestic airport that serves the Sandakan town. It is located in the downtown of Sandakan. Visit Agnes Keith House that used to be the former home of American writer Agnes Keith during 1930 and has been turned to the museum now. Take the Kinabatangan River Cruise which is the second largest river in Malaysia.

Tip: Try to reach Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center early as it gets crowded later till the end of the day.
