Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan is also known as Baki colloquially. The Baku city is located in the Caucasus region and is the world’s largest city located below sea level. The city has beautiful architecture both historic and modern, beautiful parks, stone mansions and picturesque pedestrian streets. Baku has a seamless blending of East and West and is sometimes called the love-child of Dubai and Paris. The city is known for its green bulvars or promenades which are in stark contrast to its desert surroundings. Baku is nicknamed the ‘City of Winds’ due to harsh winds. 

Tip: Mid-June to August are the hottest months in Baku. October to March are the best time when the weather is cool, not cold. 

Flights to Baku

International and domestic flights to Baku are served by Baku Heydar Aliyev International Airport (BAK). The airport was earlier known as Bina International Airport. The airport is located 20 km northeast of the city.

Other nearby attractions are Yeni Bulvar, Velopark, Baku Eye, National Flag Sq, Yarat, and Crystal Hall. Don’t miss the Heydar Aliyev Center, MOMO, and Flame Towers Area, from where you can get the finest views of the city centre.

One can also a day trip to Petroglyph reserve and mud volcanoes, approximately 60 km from the city. On the route visit the Bibi-Heybet Mosque and Sixov beach. There are several tour operators who conduct tours to these places. 

Tip: Local travelling in Baku can be done by metros and buses. Purchase the BakiKart, a rechargeable card which works for both metros and buses.  

Staying in Baku:

Baku has a variety of accommodation in all budget ranges. One can choose from beautiful boutique hotels to glitzy multi-stars or from mid-range hotels to mini-hotels. The city also has a number of affordable guesthouses. The old city area is known for these guests’ houses and mini-hotels. Montin, Bayil and areas around Nariman Nerimanov are good for popular hotels in a mid-range budget. Hotels near Nariman Nerimanov are good for transport as the metro station is nearby. Staying near the heart of the city or Old city is good for people who want to avoid long commuting or traffic conditions.
