Armenia is the capital of the Quindio Department and a mid-sized city in Colombo. It is part of the coffee triangle along with Pereira and Manizales. Since it is a major coffee-growing city it is also one of the main centres of the national economy for the country. On October 14, 1889, the city was founded by Jesús María Ocampo because of his love for hunting especially Jaguars. Six months after its founding it reached a population of 100 people giving it a legal recognition by the government. The flourishing tourist industry has made the city and its surrounding area very popular. The beautiful and quaint city is an ideal way to start exploring the Quindio region of Colombia.

Tip: the Best way to get around the city is via taxi. They do have a meter system but you can negotiate and book it for a fixed rate for the entire day.

Getting There

El Eden International Airport is an international airport serving Armenia. It is located in the southwest of Armenia near the town of La Tebaida. The terminal was rebuilt after the 25 January 1999 earthquake. Currently, they don’t have any direct flights to Armenia from Singapore.  However, you can book one of the connecting Singapore to Armenia flights operating regularly. The travel duration from Singapore to Armenia can be more than 24 hours depending on the waiting time at the layover. The most popular airlines are Air France Airways & Avianca Airlines as they give multiple flights with fewer layovers for this route.

What to See 

Armenia may not have many things to offer but it is a perfect place to spend a couple of days and an ideal place as base stay to explore Quindío. Visit the Quimbaya Gold Museum known as the most beautiful museum of Colombia. It pays tribute to Quimbayas the ancient inhabitants of the region. It is one of the few places in Colombia that provides information cards in English along with Spanish. You will get to learn about ancient history and get to admire the silver and gold pieces kept as an exhibit. Find the Tree of Love in the Founders Park; it is a hollowed tree with beautiful birds flying around it.  As per the legend body of 2 lovers were found inside the tree when it was brought from the valley of Maravélez. Take out time to admire the Park of Life that locals refer to as paradise of Armenia. You can visit one of the coffee estates and take a coffee tour to learn how coffee is produced.

Tip: You can pack and picnic hamper and have a family outing in the Park of Life and sometimes there are events here to keep you occupied

Eat & Stay

The coffee-producing city Armenia has many cafés big and small where you give your taste buds taste of Colombian coffee. Bolivar Avenue and Carrera 13 have many hip cafes and restaurants that you can explore if budget is not a constraint.  Calle 19 is the best place to explore if you are looking to eat in a budget. Bolivar Avenue has many pubs, bars and night club making it the perfect area to enjoy the nightlife.

If you are looking to stay in a budgeted hotel then City Center is the perfect area to look for a nice accommodation. North of City and Rona Rosa have some of the best 5-star and high-end hotels in the city.

Downtown Armenia is the best place to go shopping they have everything from big stores to street shopping for you to explore.

Tip: You have to buy at least a few grams of Colombian coffee when you are in Armenia.
