Join us for talk six of our Talk Series, ‘20th Century International History’ - The Failure of 1930s Appeasement The Failure of 1930s Appeasement Join us on Friday 31st July in the Museum at 2pm, as Lee Steptoe explains why Britain and France made no serious attempt to stop the aggressive expansion of dictators in the 1930s, as fear of another war, economic weakness, and misplaced trust in negotiation allowed their ambitions to go unchecked before the outbreak of World War II. When the team at the East Midlands Organ Museum was offered the ex-Granada Grantham Compton Organ, Carl recognised that this important instrument should really return home to the region from which it was originally intended, from his initial contact with Grantham museum, the very first organisation that he reached out to, it was clear that this was the ideal forever home for this important part of Grantham's musical history. As a passionate advocate for heritage, he recognises Grantham Museum as a vital community asset—somewhere that celebrates local history while offering something for everyone. After a 53-year absence, the Compton Organ has finally returned to Grantham. For Carl, supporting not only the Organ’s installation and ongoing care but also the stewardship of the museum it now calls home felt like a natural progression. Join us on 11 Sept, 2pm in the Museum, as we discover how the young botanist who sailed with Captain Cook on the Endeavour Join us on Friday 11th September in the Museum at 2pm, as we discover how the young botanist who sailed with Captain Cook on the Endeavour explored and documented plants from Brazil to Australia, shaping the study of natural history. Sir Joseph Banks Bt (1743-1820) of Revesby Abbey, Lincolnshire, first discovered botany as a student at Oxford and then conducted research on the collections of the Chelsea Physic Garden and the British Museum. Aged only 25, Banks joined Captain Cook's great Endeavour voyage and explored the plants of Brazil, Tahiti, New Zealand, and Australia. This illustrated talk will explore Banks’s discoveries. I nformation about the speakers: Mark James FLS and Dr Anke Timmermann FLS are antiquarian book specialists and Fellows of the Linnean Society based in Grantham.
