Chelmsford - Small99's People, Planet, Pint™: Sustainability Meetup | The Ale House

People, Planet, Pint is your local sustainability meetup, where you can find local inspiration and like-minded friends over a drink. Pop down to your local People Planet Pint meetup to find more about what's going on locally with sustainability and how you can get involved. No pitches, powerpoints or panels. Just People, Planet, Pint/s. Your local meetup is a great place to start your journey or continue learning, and meet diverse people to chat about life and how we can sustain it. Every job is a climate job, so come along and learn about how you can take action, as well as what is going on locally. We welcome everyone, regardless of their experience or background. People Planet Pint is a space where everyone can feel comfortable learning about sustainability and sharing their ideas. Afterall, creating a sustainable future requires connected communities. And what better way to bring everyone together than over a drink? Your Volunteer Host Owen Middleton Andrew Wright Our Sponsor KRYSTAL are an award-winning, 100% renewably powered web hosting provider, with datacentres in the UK, US, & Europe. They are climate positive, and their approach centres on value, quality and transparency. We are delighted to announce our partnership with Krystal (the UK's only B Corp web hosting/cloud provider), and welcome them on board as sponsors of the People, Planet, Pint events. This means the first 10 drinks are on Krystal at every event, and has allowed us to invest and upscale the series to accelerate action on climate change. We host the UK's fastest-growing sustainability meet-ups, People Planet Pint and People Planet Pastry, which now take place in over 140+ cities across 15 countries, with around 80 events a month. Since 2023, we have directly trained over 3,000 businesses on Net Zero and carbon reduction and have reached over 50,000 businesses with our events and digital tools. Beaded Jewellery - Weekly Workshop | 6 New London Rd

Beaded Jewellery - Weekly Workshop | 6 New London Rd

Beaded Jewellery Event with Mary and Andee, held every Monday We have 2 very skilled artists who volunteer their time to run this workshop: Mary and Andee Mary, started jewellery making about 20 years ago after visiting a craft fair where one of the stalls sold lots of amazing semi precious stones. After a break of 10 years, she visited the Jewellery Class at the Art Place which re-ignited her love for making jewellery. Four years on she is still making and enjoying every minute. Andee is a silversmith, a metalworker who creates objects out of silver or other precious metals, with 15 years experience. Andee is very patient and every week, she brings a new project to the group. How you can use beading jewellery as a mindfulness exercise: "The act of rolling the beads between your fingers is a physical reminder of the intention you set at the outset, and prompts you to return to your breathing and refocus your attention when your mind wanders—and it will wander. Think of your beads as a tool that can help guide you into a deeper meditation practice" All materials are provided. £5 per person The price of this workshop will go towards paying for the space and materials. The workshop is helped by one or more of our volunteers so please always be kind, and respectful as they are giving their time. Be understanding that this is also part of their journey for their own mental health and well-being. Suitable for all ages. But if under 14 years old a parent or guardian should stay with them during the workshop. Place: 6 New London Road, High Chelmer Shopping Centre (previously Chelmer Fine Art). Safety and inclusivity If you have any accessibility requirements, please let us know in advance , and we will do our best to accommodate you. The Art Place is a Creative Community Safe Space and a project of Ideas Hub (reg. charity). We appreciate your support in helping us continue to provide services like this to the community. Check out all our workshops at https://linktr.ee/the_art_place. Thank you for supporting our charity! Information Source: Ideas Hub Chelmsford | eventbrite

ERO Presents: Dr Adéle Isabella de Steiger (1867-1944) | Essex Record Office
Wharf Road, Chelmsford, CM2 6YT

ERO Presents: Dr Adéle Isabella de Steiger (1867-1944) | Essex Record Office

a pioneering Victorian alienist psychiatrist Speaker: Rachael Bailey-Gibson The history of psychiatry has long emphasised the contribution of Victorian male alienists/psychiatrists such as John Conolly (1794-1866), James Crichton-Browne (1840-1938), and Henry Maudsley (1835-1918). Yet, Dr Adèle Isabella de Steiger was one of the first female alienist psychiatrists in the country, appointed Assistant Medical Officer at the Essex Lunatic Asylum [Warley Hospital] in March 1896. She was also the first female doctor of the Medico-Psychological Association, the predecessor of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. By the end of her career, she was Medical Superintendent in all but name on the crowded female wards and performed post-mortems on both female and male cadavers. Yet, her contribution to psychiatry has been entirely overlooked – until now. This talk explores Dr de Steiger’s life and career, from her childhood to her training at the London School of Medicine for Women, where she was supervised by Elizabeth Garrett Anderson (1836-1917), the first woman to qualify as a physician and surgeon. I will also discuss her appointment and her twenty-five years of work at Essex Asylum, until her retirement in 1921. Dr de Steiger’s commonplace book from 1893, lent to me by her great-nephew, will also be examined. This rare source offers insight into her personal thoughts, influences, and motivations, bringing her fascinating work to life. Additionally, the extensive archive at ERO has provided a deeper understanding of patient treatment and care in asylums, as well as how and why psychiatry evolved towards the end of the long nineteenth century. Rachael Bailey-Gibson is a Future 100 Centenary Scholarship Postgraduate Researcher at the University of Leicester. She is in the final year of her PhD programme. Her thesis, supervised by Dr Claire Wood and Professor Claire Brock, is titled ‘Remote Benevolent Despots? The English Alienist Psychiatrist.’ She is also Honorary Membership Secretary for the Friends of Historic Essex, who support the work of the ERO. Information Source: Essex Record Office | eventbrite
