Sashiko is a great craft for beginners and experienced alike, but familiarity with using needle and thread is preferred but not required. The techniques was first seen in Japan during the Edo period (1603-1867). It was used by farming and fishing people to make and repair textiles and work wear. The basics are easy and wonderfully meditative. Sashiko is well suited for visible mending and embellishment. Examining the works of two modern artists, we look through the apparent reality in an attempt to witness the truth behind the canvas. Taking a look at the works of two modern artists, Haegue Yang and Hiroshi Sugimoto, we examine the apparent reality to witness what is obvious. We see the narratives by which the world is given meaning through boundary and context. It is an exercise in watching the play of the movie but never forgetting the still, white screen behind that allows for all narratives. There will be a post-lecture Q&A session. Innovation and Engineering Summer Camp at UL Lafayette Project Innovate: Innovation and Engineering Summer Camp, Entering Grades 2-6, 9am-3pm In this five day camp, students entering grades 2-6 in FA 2026, will develop skills in design and engineering through hands-on robotics and design challenges. Biomimicry, looking to nature for inspiration for our own designs, will be part of the experiences. We will include new activities this summer using the newly released LEGO® Education Computer Science & AI Kit that teaches fundamental AI literacy, focusing on hands-on, local, and ethical AI application. Key concepts include AI classification, machine learning models, and computer vision, where students train models to recognize patterns, analyze data, and create interactive, responsive models. Throughout the week we will visit several engineering labs to deepen students understanding of how engineering can be used to solve problems facing humanity. We will video conference with leading experts in robotics and biomimicry. Students will swim at the UL pool, weather permitting. All lunches are provided.
