Details

Join us at the 2023 OUTstanding Speaker Series in Chicago on November 2nd for an enlightening lecture by Jules Gill-Peterson on "Great Society Transsexualism". In this thought-provoking talk, Gill-Peterson, Associate Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University, will delve into the political economic function of the concept of "transition" in relation to trans people's rights. Rather than reducing their existence to private matters of psychology and medical gatekeeping, she will critically examine the genealogy of these frames and their alignment with the Great Society welfare state. By reevaluating the prevailing narratives surrounding trans precarity, Gill-Peterson will shed new light on the intersection of gender norms, state power, and capitalist crises. As the author of "Histories of the Transgender Child", Gill-Peterson has received recognition for her groundbreaking research that challenges the myth of transgender children as a recent phenomenon. This event is part of the collaborative OUTstanding speaker series, organized by the Center for the Study of Gender & Sexuality and the UChicago Alumni PRIDE network, and is free and open to the public. Don't miss this opportunity to gain valuable insights into the political and economic dimensions of trans issues.
