Description:
AI is now ubiquitous and full of promise—but with that promise come risks, especially when we overlook the importance of designing with intentionality. When AI systems are built without understanding users’ needs, context, and values, the result can be harmful, biased, or simply unusable.
To design AI responsibly, we must keep people at the center—we must make it human-centred.
This course explores what it truly means to design a human-centred AI product. You'll learn best practices and gain hands-on experience using the HAX Toolkit, a practical resource for designing thoughtful, ethical AI interactions.
You will also gain strategies for engaging cross-functional stakeholders—especially when it’s challenging to build alignment or buy-in around a human-centred approach.
Course Outline:
Design & AI Foundations
We explore what AI is, how it has evolved, and where it stands today. We examine key failures to underscore the need for responsible, human-centred design.
You'll compare the strengths of humans and AI, identify where AI can truly add value, and learn how to decide when it’s appropriate to use AI—always with the goal of serving real human needs.
The HAX Toolkit
You’ll get an in-depth introduction to the HAX Toolkit, including its key components: the Guidelines, Design Patterns, Workbook, and Playbook. You’ll also gain a deeper understanding of how to apply the guidelines through real-world examples that showcase human-centred AI experiences.
Stakeholder Engagement Best Practices
Reflect on common challenges when working with cross-functional stakeholders, and learn strategies to successfully engage them and build buy-in.
Hands-on with the HAX Toolkit
In this workshop, you’ll practice using the HAX Toolkit by applying it to an AI product of your choice. Gain just enough confidence with key components to bring it back to your workplace—knowing when and where to integrate it into your design workflow.
