Hankou Li Bamboo Bed Culture Festival | Wuhan
Jul 3–Aug 30, 2026 (UTC+8)
Wuhan
Celebration
The Hankouli Bamboo Bed Culture Festival is a unique cultural event held in Hankouli, Wuhan, Hubei Province. The festival aims to showcase and inherit the distinctive bamboo bed culture of the Wuhan area. Bamboo beds have a long history of use in Wuhan during the summer, serving as an important tool for local residents to cool off in the hot weather. During the festival, activities include bamboo bed displays, traditional handicraft making, cultural lectures, and interactive experiences, aiming to allow participants to experience the charm and historical heritage of traditional culture. As the highlight of this event, the 8th Bamboo Bed Culture Season emphasizes a down-to-earth approach. This summer, Hankouli will launch a brand-new "Hankou Dialect Showdown," featuring not only old bamboo beds but also a stage for a Wuhan dialect competition. Simultaneously, the "Wuhan Summer Street Concert" will be held in Hankouli in August, featuring various operas, folk songs, and classic oldies, allowing listeners to relive old dreams amidst the creaking of bamboo beds and the sounds of music. Of course, the nightly open-air cinema will still be a highlight, letting the summer night breeze bring the stories of light and shadow to your eyes.
This play is adapted from Shakespeare's classic comedy "As you like it," blending the power struggles of the court with the gentle healing of the forest in an immersive theatrical experience. Rosalind, the exiled duke's daughter, conceals her strength in tenderness, disguising herself as a man to pursue freedom. The passionate young Orlando falls in love at first sight on the field, carving love poems on tree barks to express his longing. Sisters protect each other without rivalry; brothers move from suspicion to redemption while staying true to themselves. Love poems sway from trees, and wish-filled tree hollows hold endless hopes. When drama intertwines with romance, and pursuit embraces passion, this feast of love, freedom, and fulfillment will surely grant every attendee their heart's desire—as you like it.

Wuhan Theater, this landmark building carrying the cultural memory of Wuhan, has been the core stage of the city's artistic life since its completion in 1959, with its unique architectural style and profound cultural heritage. As a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit, it is not only an important cultural heritage of Wuhan but also affectionately called "the people's great hall of Wuhan" by citizens, symbolizing the city's relentless pursuit and respect for high art.
Over the years, Wuhan Theater has witnessed countless artistic classics blossom here. From the magnificent performances of top domestic and international symphony orchestras to the brilliant presentations of high-end performances such as dramas, operas, and dances, it has always been an important platform for artistic exchange and dissemination. The building itself blends Chinese and Western elements, with its solemn and elegant exterior and exquisite internal acoustic design, creating an unparalleled viewing experience. Every audience member stepping into the theater can feel the unique atmosphere where history and art intertwine.
Today, the Wuhan Theater once again welcomes a climax of cultural innovation. The immersive audio-visual epic The Great City · A Friend in Music, jointly produced by the Wuhan Culture and Tourism Group and the Wuhan Performance Group, is being grandly staged here. The play takes the 2,000-year-old culture of friendship through music as its main thread, starting from the timeless tale of "encountering a kindred spirit through lofty mountains and flowing waters" between Boya and Ziqi during the Spring and Autumn Period, spanning the river of time to portray the vibrant vitality of modern Wuhan. Through cutting-edge sound, light, and projection technologies combined with live stage art, the audience will immerse themselves in Wuhan's millennia-old cultural heritage—experiencing both the profound artistic conception by the Ancient Lute Platform and the modern splendor of the three towns along the river. The production not only recreates those soul-stirring historical encounters and legacies but also profoundly interprets how the "friendship through music" culture has evolved from personal bonds into the essence of a city's spirit.
As a model of cultural and tourism integration in Wuhan, The Great City · A Friend in Music breaks the boundaries of traditional stages, bringing history to life through immersive storytelling. The audience is no longer a mere spectator but becomes a participant traveling through time, witnessing Wuhan's cultural blending and urban transformation from ancient times to the present in the interplay of light and shadow. This performance is not only an artistic feast but also a profound exploration of urban culture, perfectly showcasing Wuhan's dual charm as a historical city and a modern metropolis.
When traveling to Wuhan, if you truly want to understand the soul of this city, the Wuhan Theater and The Great City · A Friend in Music are must-visit destinations. Here, you will encounter not just a performance, but also a profound dialogue with the millennia-old culture of friendship through music, and an unforgettable journey to touch the spiritual pulse of Wuhan.
