Join us in welcoming Rachel M. Hanson for a reading and signing of her debut memoir The End of Tennesee, a haunting memoir of childhood trauma, building a life, and living with wounds that never heal. Hanson will be at Hub City Bookshop on Tuesday, December 3rd at 6:00 PM. Get a 10% discount on the book when you present your Eventbrite RSVP at the bookshop register. About the Book:Southern Review of Books Best Southern Books of August 2024 Not a year before I ran away from home at seventeen, I stepped out of the house at dusk, still able to see shrub oaks thinned out for winter, fame flower, too, and dun clay so wet the smell of it seemed settled in my skin. So begins Rachel M. Hanson's debut memoir about growing up impoverished, uneducated, and surrounded by violence. In lyrical, fragmented prose, she lays bare the impossible choice between self-preservation and her love for five younger siblings for whom she had become a second mother. As the years pass, Hanson struggles with guilt for leaving her siblings as she slowly realizes she could not save them. The End of Tennessee is a testament to a sister's love, resilience, and determination, a book for anyone who has left one life to create another. About the Author:Rachel M. Hanson is the author of The End of Tennessee: a memoir, and her writing can be found in Creative Nonfiction, The Iowa Review, and Joyland Magazine. She was a Grand Canyon river runner for many years, and is now an assistant professor at UNC Asheville. She resides in Asheville, North Carolina with her partner and their many animals. Beyond The Binary: Eight Non-Binary Plays- A Celebration of the Playwrights | The Drama Book Shop

West
Arts
Theater
The Drama Book Shop presents, in association with Jay Michaels Global Communications, “Beyond the Binary: Works by Eight Non-Binary Playwrights”- A talkback, signing, and live podcast recording. About the book: Gender non-binary theatre has a long and diverse history, yet modern stages scarcely spotlight its stories. Beyond the Binary: Eight Non-Binary Plays changes this by presenting short plays from non-binary playwrights that intersect with race, class, religion, politics, and pop culture. Audiences can meet Joan of Arc, hear toys talk, visit New York City, feel the heartbeat of a family, and more – all through the lens of non-binary playwrights. These pieces can be assembled into an evening of theatre that centers non-binary experiences, or they can be broken up and integrated into larger events. They are also ideal for classroom use and individual inspiration. The plays contained here are a love letter to non-binary joy, and they can’t wait to celebrate with you. About the Authors: Five of the eight playwrights in Beyond the Binary will discuss their work and sign copies of the collection. Jonathan Alexandratos (they/them) is a New York City-based playwright whose award-winning work has been performed internationally. In 2020, they won the Parity Award from Parity Productions for their play Turning Krasniqi. This is their first edited collection of theatrical work. M Sloth Levine (they/them) is a transgender playwright, designer, and director in Brooklyn, NY. Their plays are sour gummy worms, sharp, sticky, and sweet. They write for gothic dollhouses, for costume trunks full of rubber masks and elastic tutus. These plays are made of velvet, petrified wood, slime, celluloid, gold leaf, weed, gelatin, and citric acid. Dani Martineck (they/them) is a New York-based actor, writer, and Earphones Award-winning audiobook narrator with a background in experimental psychology. Their short film The Rushing of the Sea is in festivals as of 2023. In all their mediums, Dani makes art that helps people feel less alone. J.C. Pankratz (they/them) is a proud queer, non-binary, transgender playwright and educator writing genre-defying work about gender, class, trauma, and magic. Their plays are Mortals (Pridefest at The Tank), Eat Your Young (workshop production, Boston Playwrights’ Theatre), Redeemer Mine (Finalist, O’Neill Playwrights Conference), among other award-winning work. Ashley Lauren Rogers (she/they) is an award-winning writer and trans rights activist. She was a writing fellow of the Trans Theatre Lab through WP Theatre and The Public in 2019. She is the Literary Director for Step 1 Theatre Project, and was Artist-in-Residence at Middlesex County Vocational Technical School in East Brunswick, NJ. About the event We kindly ask that you review the following information before reserving your spot: This Eventbrite ticket is your reservation for the event. Please note that the purchase of “Beyond the Binary: Works by Eight Non-Binary Playwrights” ($15.95) is required for entry. Epic Philosophy: What Did Virgil Believe? | Cranmer Hall

Dec 5, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
West
Arts
Literary Arts
There was no greater poet in the Roman world than Virgil, and for many readers there has been no more beautiful work of verbal art than his epic, the Aeneid. This poem not only shaped the next half-millennium of Latin literature but guided the western literary tradition through the Middle Ages. Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Dante’s Divine Comedy, and Milton’s Paradise Lost are simply unimaginable without it. It is, as T. S. Eliot concluded, “the classic of all Europe”. Yet what did its author actually believe about the world? What philosophy inspired his art? Rumoured to be an Epicurean, and then a Stoic, Virgil’s inner thoughts are notoriously hard to chart; indeed, for many Christians Virgil was taken as a prophet of the Faith he did not live to see. Dante, for one, did not hesitate to choose Virgil as his sacred guide through the infernal terrors of Hell. After completing the Aeneid, Virgil hoped to devote the rest of his life to philosophy, but sudden death deprived him of that pleasure. This lecture, which will be open and accessible to all comers, will piece together what we can know of this great poet’s intellectual journey and philosophical outlook. Sic itur ad astra. Warm up at the bookshop with a sweet romance! Jenny Proctor will be at Hub City Bookshop on Thursday, December 5th for a reading and signing of her new book Once Upon a Boyband. Once upon a time, she slept with his poster beside her bed. Now he's all grown up, hiding behind a burly beard and lots of flannel ... and she doesn't have a clue. We would love to know you're coming to the event! Get a 10% discount on the book when you RSVP on eventbrite and show it at the register! About the Book:Eight years ago, Adam Driscoll walked away from his stage name—Deke—and the boyband that turned him into an international star before his eighteenth birthday. And he never looked back. It didn’t even matter that everyone blamed him for the band’s breakup. He might miss making music, but he had good reasons for walking. Give him solitude over thousands of screaming fans any day of the week. These days, the only company he’s truly interested in is that of the vet who works closely with his dog rescue—Dr. Laney Lawson. She’s brilliant, funny, beautiful, and best of all, she has no idea he used to be a pop star. But then Adam’s bandmates reach out about a one-time reunion concert benefiting a charity that’s close to his heart, and he starts to wonder if some things are worth a little extra attention. He loves the idea of singing again, but saying yes would out him to the small mountain community that has become his refuge. Worse, it would out him to Laney. But old hurts can’t stay buried forever. And something tells Adam that scary or not, saying yes is the decision he needs to make. He just has to hope he doesn’t lose the life—or the woman—he loves in the process. About the Author:Jenny Proctor is an award-winning author of more than twenty romantic comedies and an Amazon bestseller. She began her career in publishing in 2013; her writing has been a constant since then and is now her full-time focus, but in the past, she spent several years as the owner and managing editor of Midnight Owl Editors and as the chair of the Storymakers Conference. Wired for relationships, Jenny loves public speaking, teaching, and building lasting connections. Jenny was born in the mountains of Western North Carolina, a place she considers one of the loveliest on earth. She loves to hike with her family and spend time outdoors, but she also adores lounging around her home, reading great books or watching great movies and, when she’s lucky, eating delicious food she doesn’t have to prepare herself.
