Special visit to Grimsby’s Ice Factory and dockside with Historic England’s David Walsh, plus lunch and restoration & regeneration insights. Join us for a bespoke behind-the-scenes visit to historic Grimsby to see examples of heritage-led regeneration and understand a little of the challenges faced when redeveloping historic sites. Our tour will be led by Historic England’s Principal Inspector of Historic Buildings and Areas, David Walsh. We will explore buildings and spaces which helped to make Grimsby the biggest fishing port in the world. Starting at Grimsby Town Station, we will have chance to see the regeneration at St James’ Square and the riverside, consider the sensitive conversion of grade II-listed industrial warehouses dating from 1821 which have been brought back into use, now operating as an amazing youth facility, the Horizon Youth Zone. We will then travel by mini coach to the historic dock area where we will visit the Ice Factory. Once named among Europe’s ‘Seven Most Endangered’ sites, the Ice Factory sits at the heart of Grimsby’s fishing heritage and the fish docks quarter. Lunch – included – will be at the Creative Start’s social enterprise café, the Great Escape, situated in a former ships stores and offices in the densely packed historic fish docks at the heart of the Heritage Action Zone. The visit will also take in the nationally celebrated Alfred Enderby’s smokehouse, listed Grade II. At the end of the day, we will return by mini coach to Grimsby Town Station. The tour is planned to coincide with trains arriving from Doncaster at 10:43am and departing from Grimsby Town to Doncaster at 5:34pm.
