We rented a car for our trip (July 22nd - July 26th). We drove from Wakkanai to Otaru and chose a Toyota Prius or similar compact car (5 seats, 4 doors, automatic, hybrid, 2 24-inch suitcases). Considering we had two large pieces of luggage, we chose a five-seater sedan, which could fit both of our luggage!
Although our reservation was for 10 AM pickup, we arrived an hour early, and the staff were very happy to assist us!
The car performed very well; driving was smooth and comfortable throughout the trip!
Most importantly, it was very fuel-efficient. We drove a total of 670 kilometers, and the total fuel cost was 3634 yen (approximately 91 Malaysian Ringgit).
We chose to return the car at Sapporo JR station, which was very convenient and easy!
Driving in Japan, as long as you obey traffic rules, don't speed, and pay attention to pedestrian crossings, makes for a very enjoyable trip. We stopped several times to explore small scenic spots, which added a lot of surprises to the journey!
We booked to return the car at 3 PM, which was two hours late, but we still completed the task within service hours. The process didn't take too long, about 25 minutes.

Everything went well except that like every car renting experiences, they always try to sell you more insurance other than the basic which you booked for. I believed that the decision to buy more insurance should be left entirely to the individual who is renting the car and not to be hardselled into it by the rental company.
