Our list will be helpful for your itinerary whenever you wish to visit Perth City with your kids beyond the school holidays in 2020. Plan your vacation with our calendar!

1. Unleash creativity at Yagan Square

A hub of all things community, the Yagan Square, opened in 2018, is the latest addition to Perth’s bustling communal space. Connecting the Perth Railway Station, Horseshoe Bridge and Perth Busport, it is a convenient commuter exchange as well as an attractive arena for locals and visitors to meet, connect and unwind in the lively atmosphere of Perth City, both in the day and at night.

Take your kids to the upper level of the Market Hall building to arouse their creativity at Playscape, a fun entertainment hideout for kids of all age groups. From gentler play areas for toddlers to challenging terrains for older kids, the fun and interactive environment is designed to reflect Western Australia’s geological and rock formations, allowing the kids to appreciate and celebrate Mother Nature while getting down on all fours. The Playscape is also bordered by a natural forest canopy and offers stunning views over Yagan Square.

2. Sample chocolates at The Margaret River Chocolate Company

You do not need to head out to its factories at the Swan Valley or Margaret River to taste some of the delectable chocolates prepared by The Margaret River Chocolate Company. Make your way down to their store at Murray Street to have a sweet treat!

Located on the ground floor of the Wesley Quarter, a courtyard style shopping centre in Perth City, The Margaret River Chocolate Company is open seven days a week and offers free tasting of its deliciously milky candies your kids will go crazy for. They also have available a range of hampers you can purchase for your loved ones back home.

You will be able to notice its shopfront across the road from the intersection at Queen Street!

3. Get comfortable at Northbridge Piazza

Snuggle up and take in the chilled air of Perth with your kids on the open grounds of Northbridge Piazza. All year round, this communal space runs a free outdoor cinema with its huge LED screen, the city’s first and permanent outdoor installation. Operating 24 hours a day, there will always be something to watch, be it a feature film, creative presentation, sports tournament or a music show. Grab a coffee and some snacks for you and your family, find a good spot on the grass and unwind after a day of sightseeing! There are also free activities held at this arena - do check them out when you can!

4. Stimulate the senses with an art tour

Anything visually attractive can appeal to the kids, and at Perth City, there is nothing short of such beauty. Among the six free walking tours you can embark on, be sure to join Perth’s Art City Walking Tour to stimulate your kids’ minds as they are taken through 11 of the city’s public art structures. As pictured above, one of them includes the cast aluminium sculpture, First Contact, which sits prominently near the edge of Elizabeth Quay. It represents the arrival of the European settlers on Perth’s soil which the local indigenous group, known as the Noongar people, believed were their ancestors who were returning from the sea.

The selection in the curated art trail is part of more than 200 public artworks in Perth that transform the public space in ways that bring the stories of the past alive while reminding us of present-day narratives.

5. Splash around at Elizabeth Quay

Speaking of Elizabeth Quay, be sure to head back here after the art tour to let the kids have some fun with water! Alongside the calming breeze of the Swan River, the waterfront precinct takes water play a notch livelier at its BHP Billiton Water Park. Kids can run around amid the colourful choreographed jets, create their own play ideas and splash around merrily.

6. Fill buckets and cannons at Hyde Park

Just five minutes north from the heart of Perth City is Hyde Park, home to a stellar water park where kids can get more involved with all the equipment they need for a complete water play. There are cannons, sprays and buckets you can fill up with water as well as fountains to run through. Fret not if you feel your kids are too young to play here. Crawlers and toddlers will enjoy collecting water in the buckets, making for an immersive out-of-the-home learning experience with nature. The tall centuries-old trees offer soothing shade over the play areas - adventurous kids can go ahead to climb the trees too!

The water park is open from November until late March, so you can catch the fun while you are there during the holidays.

7. More fun with water at Forrest Place

Another water activity within the comforts of Perth City stretches across Forrest Place, a pedestrianised square within the Central Business District. Called the Water Labyrinth, it is one of Perth’s highly-patronised water sculptures that jets fountains in a maze for kids to play daily from 10am to 6pm.

Be sure to bring an extra pair of clothes each time you head out to the water parks!

8. Explore flora on nature trails

For more adventures with your little one, head down to the Kings Park and Botanic Garden to explore Western Australia’s unique bed of native flora. A 90-minute walk in this tranquil sanctuary of Perth will be perfect for the kids to get up close with the best of Mother Nature. Should you be planning your trip to Perth between September and November, it will be a wonderful time to capture the blooming wildflowers, which you can admire on curated walks around Kings Park.

The park is just a few minutes’ drive from Perth City. However, if you’ve been exploring the city up till the Parliament House, you can walk along Harvest Terrace, hop onto Kings Park Road and turn left into Jorang Grove to enter the park’s compounds. The park covers a whopping 400 hectares of land. We recommend planning a full day at this beautiful space if you want to cover its beauty, including the children’s playground (read more below).

You may also catch the wildflowers at other areas of the city, including Elizabeth Quay, during the blooming season.

9. Escape into nature’s play

While at Kings Park, do not miss out the chance to revel in one of Australia’s immersive playground experiences. Complete with unique structures, the playgrounds at Perth’s Kings Park pique the kids’ curiosity and invite them into Earth’s wonders. Your kids can connect more with nature in this outdoor playspace and we recommend you to join in the fun!

Before heading down, we would advise you to check their opening hours and announcements on unexpected closures due to the weather. Supervise your kids extra for this one!

10. Snap a picture at Crawley Edge Boatshed

Since nature is something our eyes can’t blink away from, this spot is worth a mention.

With easy access from Perth City, the Crawley Edge Boatshed offers a lovely respite from town. Located on the Swan River in the suburb of Crawley, the boatshed paints a pretty iconic blue portrait. The picturesque frame is set against the baby blue sky while lying calmly on a ripple blanket of water.

A picture on the deck leading up to the boatshed is a must when you visit Perth. Get creative with your kids in the photo!

11. Be a firefighter at DFES Education and Heritage

Kids love role-playing! For some fun play as a brave firefighter, take your kids to the DFES Education and Heritage Centre along Murray Street, just after the intersection at Irwin Street. Previously a functioning fire station, the first in Western Australia, the DFES Education and Heritage Centre accommodates histories of the city’s past emergency services as well as those employed today.

From Tuesdays to Thursdays, the fire station opens its doors for kids to explore the wonders of this tireless profession. There is a real fire truck that flashes lights like those you see on the roads. The compartments are open for the kids to take a look at its features. You can also let your kids get the feel of turning the wheels of the water valves (don’t worry, no water spurts out). Be sure to dress your child in a firefighter's jacket and helmet, and snap a picture next to the truck!

There are also other activity areas in the level above. Your kids can sit down for some colouring and puzzle-solving games. They can also walk through interactive educational displays and learn how to respond in crises such as earthquakes and cyclones, and most importantly, find out how to “get down low and go, go, go!”

12. Read a book at the State Library

If you think your child has had enough fun for the holiday and needs another mind-stimulating activity, take them to the State Library of Western Australia and throw them into the world of books! On the mezzanine level, The Story Place is decked out in a vibrant and colourful interior that is inviting for kids. Perfect to strengthen their interest in reading, it offers a wondrous selection of books for children aged 0 to eight years old. You may also use this cosy space to play a game with your little toddler or whip up a story to feed their imagination. Do check out some of the activities held at The Story Place when you’re in Perth City.

Perth City offers some of Australia’s best experiences for kids which amazingly are equally entertaining for adults. Whether they are interested in outdoor water games, nature's hideouts or simply reading a book, there will be something for every child.
