In september with a large jeep this route is perfectly manageable. River crossings were fun. Be aware for fissures in the road and drive carefully. We did the drive to Laki in a little bit over 1,5h....
a must, if you are in the area (during summer)
we went there with Secret Iceland on a jeep trip. Really worth. Great scenery, especially if you are interessted in geology and vulcanism.
