Howick Historical Village

Howick Village clearly reproduces the life of the early British colonists in the 1840s and about half a century later. There are more than 30 historic buildings in the village, including cottages, schools, churches, blacksmiths, grocery stores, and military tents. In order to prevent the Maori from attacking themselves, the British specially set up defensive villages here and recruited veterans to immigrate. At first, the soldiers were only housed in temporary tents. Later, in recognition of them, the British government allocated land and houses to them, and the village of Howick was formed. Today the village is still inhabited by descendants of the veterans. 1. Pastoral life Whether it is a wooden cottage or a grass-covered thatched hut, many English-style farmhouses in the village reproduce the pastoral life of the defense soldiers in a foreign country at that time. There are unburned firewood in the brick fireplace in the room; dolls belonging to that era are placed in the crib; in the study there are scrolled books, old letterheads and quills……2. All Saints Church All Saints Cathedral in Howick Village, built in 1857, is the second oldest church in New Zealand. Many local couples like to hold their wedding in this very British old-fashioned church.
