Skull Tower

Skull Tower in Nis is quite literally, as the name would suggest - a big tower made from human skulls. After the failed Serbian uprising against the Ottomans in 1809, the Turkish governor at the time, Hurshid Pasha decided it would be a major deterrent to others to take the heads of 1,000 executed Serb prisoners and turn them into a 5 meter high tower. Most of the skulls have since been stolen, however a few poor ones still remain with either circular bullet holes between the eyes, or a sword chop in the middle of the head. A lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon! :(

The "Window Pagoda" is actually only about a dozen square meters of large circular buildings, one small earth pit, some small earth pits inlaid with human skulls. There are 14 rows of small earth pits on each wall, each row can put 17 people's heads, and the four walls can put a total of 952 heads, but now only about half of them are left. Still a bit scary.

The Serbian Skull Tower is located in the Ni Municipal Museum. It is a yard of about 1,000 square meters, surrounded by grass and green trees, and a small, daisy-yellow domed Orthodox building is the only building in the courtyard. At first glance, the museum has a quiet environment, which has a little "skull" horror. But when we approached the small building, we found small sculptures of cockroaches on the small doors on all sides, and they clearly told people that this is the skull tower. Pushing the door into the pavilion, the shocking skull tower squeezed over me. The pagoda is actually a quadrangle adobe building, about3.5 meters high, there is a small earth pit on the four walls, and the earth pit is inlaid with human skulls. Despite the passing of the years, we can still see the tragic fate of these skull owners. Some skulls have clear knife marks and some skulls have broken teeth, which indicate that the dead were subjected to inhuman abuse in their lives. Each wall of the skull tower has 14 small pits, each row can put 17 people's heads, four walls can put a total of 952 heads, today we see only a small number of skulls preserved to date. In the late 18th century and early 19th century, the Serbs were unable to endure the oppression of the Turkish rulers, and a leader named Singelić led a decisive battle with 40,000 Turkish soldiers in the Chekal Mountains on the outskirts of Nis, but the rebels eventually lost due to the disparity of power. Seeing hopeless, Singelić fired his ammunition depot and died with Turkish soldiers. The angry Turkish army ordered their heads cut off and set in a mud wall!

Looking at the pedestrian building, the feeling is uncommon. I thought it was a small church. In this way, I happily went in and visited it. As soon as I opened the door, I was scared by the scene inside. The scene here is all human skulls. This is only tens of square meters. There are hundreds of human skulls piled up in the small house, and it is really scary to be here. I saw a lot of potholes on the wall here, and some skulls should have fallen. I actually went to look at the skulls carefully, to see their outlines, and a lot of the patronage had been damaged, and it looked more scary than others. I visited for about ten minutes, and I quickly came out, because it was very gloomy inside, and I dare not stay any longer. These skulls should be left in memory of someone.
