Between the super-modern Millennium Center and the glass-walled Pierhead, this historic red building is striking. The building by the sea is centered on a clock, which is said to have been the administrative hub of the port. Now the sculpture of a man at the door symbolizes the Cardiff Film Festival, and the building is more solemn when it is lit up in red at night.

The Roald Dahl Plas (the focal point of all external activities in the Cardiff Bay area) currently has a playground and a simulated beach, occupying the Oval Basin and surrounding areas, with surrounding buildings including a number of bars and restaurants. In the summer, it is used for open-air concerts and other events, such as the recent food festival.
